By engaging them in the process of analyzing and spelling spoken words, it hones their auditory skills, fosters phonemic awareness, and enriches their oral vocabulary. As they listen attentively and learn to dissect the sounds and structures of words in sentences, they develop the ability to distinguish individual sounds in spoken words, a skill known as phonemic awareness. This mental spelling, or phonemic analysis, allows them to segment spoken words into individual phonemes and label each phoneme with the alphabet symbol that spells (or matches) that sound. This, in turn, helps them create a mental spelling dictionary, enabling them to read fluently and write quickly and accurately.
